While capturing an image, several defects occur that can negatively influence the appearance and quality of an image. Chromatic aberration is one such defect that can affect the image as it brings about certain color variations.
Also known as color fringing or dispersion, chromatic aberration is a commonly occurring problem in most cameras. Usually, the abnormality is caused due to the inability of the lens to bring together every wavelength of color in the same focal plane. It can also occur when colors get focused on different positions in the focal plane. This results in a mismatch of the colors at their focal points, which can affect the image. It arises due to certain defects in the construction of the lens.
Correcting chromatic aberration using in-camera settings or by using different equipment does not always yield proper results. There are two types of chromatic aberrations: longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration. Longitudinal chromatic aberration occurs due to the inability of the different color wavelengths to converge at the same point after passing through the lens. It can cause the appearance of fringing around the objects in the image in colors of red, green or blue. It can be easily corrected by using a professional picture editing software.
On the other hand, lateral chromatic aberration is mainly caused by focusing of the color wavelengths at various positions in the focal plane. Lateral chromatic aberration appears only in the corners and high contrast portions of the image. It cannot be fixed by changing the f-stop values but can be fixed using image editing.
Chromatic aberration can be fixed by adopting many practices while capturing the image, such as by using specific lenses like prime lenses instead of zoom lenses. Increasing the aperture values will also tone down the effects of chromatic aberration in an image as well as by avoiding photographing the subject in areas of high contrast.
In modern digital cameras, many of the in-camera settings can considerably reduce chromatic aberration and other defects occurring in the images. However, they are not removed completely with such camera settings or capture methods. The final image should always undergo corrections by reputed photo editing companies to fully eliminate such defects in the images and to make it clean.
