High-quality content is a mandatory requirement if you want good business deals for your online products. Just by clicking pictures of products and uploading them on your marketing websites will not be enough to attract potential customers. The pictures need to look perfect to speak to the customers and lure them in buying the product, and for that, you will need an edited, high-quality picture.

In some cases, maybe the product picture you photographed may not look so good. Hence, you would need to do some product photo editing for enhancing the image. You can either do it by yourself or rely on any of the professional photo editing companies to get the job done. If you are doing it by yourself, tools like Adobe Photoshop will be the best pick for doing such photo editing and manipulation. Given below is a detailed tutorial on product photo editing using Photoshop.

Create a Duplicate Layer

Primarily, open your desired product image file in Adobe Photoshop. After that, go to the Layers palette, right click on the Background Layer, and select Duplicate Layer. Rename the new layer as ‘exposure correction’. Hide the original layer before you start working on the image.

Crop the Image

Go to the toolbar and select Crop. Click on the top corner of the picture and drag the crop cursor obliquely to the opposite bottom corner. You can hold the Shift key to maintain the original ratio and drag the bottom cursor up and crop out the edges evenly, until you are satisfied with the position of the product in the image.

Adjust the Levels

Level adjustment is important for making corrections to image exposure. To open this, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Now, pull the slider on the left side of the histogram to the point where graph range begins to increase in height. You can now move the center point slider along to get a punchier contrast.

Create a Clean Up Layer

Now you need to create another layer and title it as ‘clean-up layer’. Select the Clone Stamp tool from the toolbar and fine-tune the brush settings to get a proportionally sized soft brush to dust the spots you would like to remove. Make sure to keep the Opacity level at 100%.

Use the Clone Tool

Zoom in the image for checking any obvious spots or marks. If you observe any, you can remove it by using the right sized Clone Stamp tool and select the area near to the mark, press the Alt key, select clean area, and place the cursor on the spot you want to remove.

Do the Masking

In order to remove deep dust spots on reflective surfaces, you can cut out the region using Quick Mask mode that you can easily get by pressing Q on your keyboard. Select the Brush Tool, set Opacity at 100%, and paint the region. You can also use the Eraser tool for correcting any errors. Press Q for previewing the selection line. If things are fine, go to Layer > New Layer or press Ctrl + J shortcut key combo for creating a masked cutout you have done.

Remove Finer Dust

After selecting the new cutout layer, go to Layer > Filter > Noise > Medium and then blur the pixels with an 8px radius. Adjust the layer Opacity to 80%. Select Darken Blending mode first and then the Linear Dodge for editing the layer. You can reduce the overall opacity of the layer if necessary.

Replace Color

Give an even color to the background by selecting Image > Adjustments > Replace Color. Using the Eyedropper tool, click the darkest region and drag the lightness to brighten the area for creating an even white background. Ensure to zoom in to check whether the white color has the apt brightness and it blends well with the existing white background.

Fix the Color

Go to Image > Adjustments > Color Balance to get the color balance adjustment layer and remove any warmer shades in the product. Enable the Preserve Luminosity option and adjust the Highlights, Shadows, and Midtone using sliders. Toggle the preview button on and off to see the modified outcome on the go.

Do the Final Touchups

Check if there are any unwanted spots you missed that needs to be cloned. If so, you can do necessary color adjustments and make the picture better.

  • Contrast and Flatten

Use the Shadows/Highlights adjustment layer for increasing final contrasts. Slide the Midtone slider over to choose the best contrast level. Then, go to Layer > Flatten Image to flatten the final image. Upon getting the desired effect, you can save the file as PSD file in case of need for further editing.

  • Sharpen Up

Make sure the edited image is sharp, has defined edges and is good in quality. Go to Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask and activate the Preview button for monitoring the effect. Increase the Amount to 100% with zero Threshold level and bring the Radius to 2.6px.

  • Resize

After doing all the steps above, resize your image according to the web image size. You can increase the resolution of the image to 3000dpi to get a fine quality print while for web use 72dpi will be enough. To do these adjustments, go to Image > Image Size > Resolution.

Save the Image

Save the final edited image in JPEG format and add watermark before you upload the image to your website. If these edits seem time-consuming and hard for you, you can always rely on professional photo editing companies for product photo editing services and ensure that you get a high-quality result.
